Rapid impact compaction was developed to rapidly repair bomb craters on runways for the Royal Air Force.  Over the past several years, claims have been made that the technique reaches compaction depths of 20 feet or more.  This article examines the validity of those claims and demonstrates the achievable compaction depths for RIC are grossly exaggerated.
